10/15/2008 - Through the Eyes of a Child
Unless you are a part of the Jamaican diaspora who regularly goes back home, the plight of the nation’s children can easily be overlooked. On any normal school day, as you take a scenic tour of the island on your way to visiting our many beautiful and exotic attractions, you may come across some very troubling situations. For instance, there is a child sitting idly by watching his/her mother sell fruit and other goodies to pedestrians or passersby alike. The possibility exists where you can also see a child manning a stall by him/herself. These scenarios are very real. Operating vending stalls is a way of life for a great number of Jamaican parents. This serves as the only means of viable income they need to care for and educate their children. Unfortunately, these very children are taken out of school at times so they can assist in securing their livelihood. This is just a snapshot of what takes place in the lives of Jamaican children on a daily basis.
In order to provide a more in depth view, Kira Cares is embarking upon a project called “Through the Eyes of Child.” This will be an island wide venture to be undertaken by many of these very children. The aim is to use the avenue of digital photography to capture their everyday real life experiences. The children will be trained by professional photographers, following which digital cameras will be distributed to them. Upon completion, the photographs will be edited and produced into books and postcards to be sold. The proceeds from these sales will be used to help defray their educational expenses. We hope that after actively participating in this process, the skills and knowledge the children acquire can one day be utilized as a hobby or perhaps even translate into a profession.
Kira Cares is therefore soliciting your help so we can get this project underway. So far, we have received some disposable digitals costing as little as US$20.00; however, we are in need of many more at this time. The children get to keep these cameras at the end of their experience. If you would like to assist us in this very important and innovative venture, please send your donation to P.O. Box 820691, Pembroke Pines, Florida, 33082, USA.
