According to UNICEF’s publication, Changing the Future of Jamaican Children, an estimated 7,500 children in Jamaica live on the street. Many of these children are forced to find means of survival that oftentimes involve illegal activities. A great number of these street children are orphans, who have nowhere to turn for help. The fate of these street children can determine the fate of Jamaicans, since violent crimes are having a negative effect on the Jamaican economy today. Kira Cares, Inc is a non-profit organization that was founded with these street children in mind.

Kira Cares, Inc was started by a group of young-adult educators who recognized the significance of positively supporting the plight of children in Jamaica. The goal of the organization is to is to improve the quality of life for children in communities that have been ravaged by violence and poverty by providing projects that build character, encourage and stimulate academic excellence, and encourage healthy living.

Kira Cares will accomplish this goal by working together with communities, families, local institutions in Jamaica, particularly children’s homes, churches, and medical institutions to assist Jamaican children by fostering educational programs and medical initiatives. The programs are targeted at empowering children with tools that will allow for better quality of life when they become adults. initiating several mini-projects across the island, particularly in children’s homes where many orphaned and abandoned Jamaican children reside. It is also the hope of this organization that with better equipment and programs, more children will be encouraged to enter these facilities, rather than depending on the illegal livelihoods that exist on the streets of Jamaica.

Kira Cares will help to educate orphans in these homes by providing them with goods and services such as school supplies, educational toys, bedding and toiletries that will help enhance a learning and living environment in which each child will be encouraged to grow and develop as goal-oriented individuals with a sense of pride in themselves and in their country.

Our initiative began at the Best Care Children’s Home in Kingston. Best Care caters specifically to children with special needs who have been orphaned or neglected. Our organization provided living necessities, sheets, and school supplies for the children at Best Care.
